Why Freelancers Need to Help Each Other

Why freelancers should share experiences and help protect each other from scams and payment disputes.

Why Freelancers Need to Help Each Other

Many freelancers have experienced delayed payments, payment disputes, or situations where they were not paid at all after completing their work. This is a common problem that affects freelancers around the world.

Freelancers who take on small design projects worth ₹500 or ₹600 often do not have the opportunity to ask for an advance payment. Unfortunately, some people take advantage of this situation.

After receiving the completed work, some clients intentionally refuse to pay by making excuses, claiming dissatisfaction, or simply ghosting the freelancer. Once they get what they want, they move on to their next victim.

"Why Not Use Watermarks?"

At this point, you might be wondering:

Why not send the work with a watermark or in a low-resolution format until the payment is received?

Let me share a real example.

While working at a company, I once received a request to recreate a low-resolution logo that still contained a Fiverr watermark. The client wanted it converted into a clean vector file using Adobe Illustrator.

Whether the logo was legitimately owned by the client or not is unknown. However, the incident highlights an important fact: watermarks and low-resolution previews are not always effective protection.

A skilled designer can often recreate the original work from such files, which means freelancers may still be at risk even when they avoid sending the final high-quality version.

The Real Problem

The reality is simple: there is no perfect way to protect every piece of creative work.

  • Watermarks can be removed.
  • Low-resolution files can be recreated.
  • Dishonest clients will always look for new ways to exploit freelancers.

What freelancers can do, however, is help each other.

By sharing experiences and warning others about problematic clients, freelancers can make the industry a little safer for everyone.

Looking Forward

I am planning to build a platform for freelancers who have faced client scams, payment disputes, and other common challenges.

While I do not believe any platform can completely eliminate these problems, I believe it can significantly reduce them by helping freelancers learn from each other's experiences.
